Features Request 2

  • Inking Tools: Snipping tool with ability to constrain to square by holding down shift, or on Edit menu add option to Make Selection Square - tick either on or off.
  • Inking Tools: Have ability to permanently turn off windows inking/touch icon, the little blue circular bubble that appears on click. This wrecks havoc for Wacom users and is quite annoying in general. Currently the only way to turn it off, is using device manager, and deactivitaing Wacom Virtual HID driver - something that isn't immediately obvious.
  • Inking Tools: Add undo to snipping tool
  • Themes: Every time you install a new aero theme, a new control panel window is created. If one is already open, then do not open another.
  • Themes: Allow multiple themes to be installed at once, in some manner.

  • (Above) Themes: Lock individual aero aspects from further changes, as you switch between aero themes - to do this right click aero aspect and choose lock. For example you could lock sounds and aero colors from future modifications.
  • Hotkeys: New hot key for taking screen grabs from a particular monitor. Currently pressing "print screen" with a multiple monitor setup, will copy all of the monitors to the clipboard, this is often not desirable. Instead user could press print screen + number, relating to the monitor's ID as displayed in Control Panel > Screen Resolution.

  • (Above) Flip 3D: Add application icons to help users find application they are after. Also add large close icon to help in closing many applications quickly - particularly useful for touch interaction.

  • (Above) Flip 3D: Advanced features to show tabs and windows for each application. Use minimal typography to aid in quickly gauging which applications have many tabs or windows - helping you find the one you're after. To make this system nicer the smaller icon thumbnails (representing tabs or windows) for each application could be more faded as they recede deeper in 3D space - or hidden altogether until the mouse is over the application thumbnail. Another nice feature would be able to right click these application window / tab icons and close them.

  • (Above) Task Switcher: Add ability to rearrange task switcher thumbnails. This allows less alt+tabbing and alt+shift+tabbing. Because the user can organize similar applications together, or two windows they are currently working on right next to each other.

  • (Above) Jumplists: Jumplists should always be available at every level of the operating system. Including while using Windows Explorer (and while searching, shown above). However i'm not sure how to implement it, the right click menu can get heavy already from lots of third party applications installing there own commands. Probably best to implement as a fly out menu, that only appears for jumplist compatible applications.
  • Media support: Apple ".mov" h264 videos downloaded from Apple Trailers do not display in Windows Preview Pane, yet if you rename the file to ".m4v" extension the file works. Make Windows play these .mov h264 by default.
  • Applications: Paint got quite a make over with Windows 7, take it further with Windows 8 and add basic layer support, a couple more brushes, and a more modern colour picker
  • Preview Panel: Animated GIF preview support added
  • Control Panel: Major unification of all control panel windows to central window, all with modern Aero theme, and absolute consistent design.
  • Explorer: Ability to pause and resume file transfers
  • Explorer: Add ability to consolidate file transfers into a queue. User can then choose to leave downloads as per default (to all download simultaneously), or click "Consolidate Copying to Queue", all the copying windows would then be combined, and only one transfer would be happening at a time (with a queue view showing the transfers remaining).
  • Explorer: "Folder in Use" dialog says "The action can't be completed because the folder is open in another program. Close the program and try again". Problem is how do you know which application is causing this?
  • Taskbar: Add functionality to allow for multiple taskbars, each with there own start menu (identical), the user could then drag and drop applications icons to differenet taskbars on different monitors, to aid in multiple monitor workflows.
  • Start Menu: Thumbnail previews for search results made from start menu, hover mouse over search results to show thumbnail.
  • Start Menu: Allow Start menu search to act as basic calculator
  • Other: Link your entire user profile to another drive and location. Currently you can only do this for individual folders such as "My Music" and "My Documents"
